SSP Announces a New Practice: GIS Pipeline Practice

November 10, 2015 — Clarke Wiley

DENVER, Nov. 10, 2015 — Clarke Wiley, Director of Pipeline, is pleased to announce a move to a great organization and the addition of a GIS pipeline practice at SSP Innovations.

For years, SSP has been the industry leader and go to shop for utility Esri implementations/customizations, work force management and providing applications, workflows or services to stream line modernization.

It came as a natural fit to join the SSP team and extend our offerings upstream into the pipeline space.  We use the same fundamental technologies, sometimes even work within the same organizations, but inherently pipeline operators have different problems to solve and different regulations to satisfy.

What we can do to help:

So why SSP and where can we help?  As a pipeline operator do you find yourself asking these types of questions?

Where exactly is this pipeline located? What are the attributes for this line and where are the supplemental documents?  What data models are available and what model fits my organization?  Is my risk model the best it can be?  Where should I apply preventative and mitigative measures in my system?

How do I share information and easily report at year end? How do I prevent my next incident?

If data is collected and managed appropriately, all of these questions can and will be answered utilizing GIS!

Why we can help:

Recent advances in GIS technologies, spatial accuracy and data collection allow pipeline operators to utilize spatial data to understand assets.  In turn, these spatial datasets become key contributors and components in analytics and integrity management programs (IMP).

Every operator is at a different place in the process, but we are all trying to achieve the same goals…Safety, Knowledge, Compliance and Continual Improvement.

These goals start with foundational GIS inputs and these inputs comes from years of data piled in random servers, field offices, filing cabinets and vaults.  Your pipeline GIS system and ultimately your analytical results are only as good as the data that feeds it.

Pipelines have been in operation since the late 19th century (hopefully you don’t have pipes this old!) and are still considered the safest way to transport our oil, natural gas and specialty products/gases.  Due to these assets being in the ground for decades, operators like yourself have to first locate documents and then integrate the asset information into your GIS systems.

If you are still on this step, know that you are not alone.  Finding the original documents not only will assist in gathering or updating your core datasets, but it will help in the ever expanding goals of making sure each piece of data is verifiable, traceable and complete.

Again, continual improvement…increasing your understanding of where assets are and what your system is comprised of.  Achieving this goal of baseline data integration allows operators to then take the next steps in your IMP program and start to analyze, predict and improve.

In the case that you have already gone through the monumental effort of locating assets, retrieving supportable documentation and updating the attributes…congrats!

But there is still work to do and we can help. Paper drawings to compliance does not happen overnight and there are infinite ways to help optimize and automate these processes in between.

How we can help:

As the pipeline practice lead for SSP Innovations, myself and our team of experts can help guide you down this path.

I have a goal at SSP and that is to provide transmission/midstream pipeline operators with a proven organization that can facilitate GIS modernization, streamline data management workflows and help accomplish your regulatory and risk goals.

Consultants, project managers, DBAs, system architects and GIS analysts can help in a variety of ways to help push your organization down that path.

Our Team Experience:

Reach out to our team to hear about some of our exciting projects and past experiences. Let’s discuss how we can immediately help your pipeline operation and GIS technologies.  The SSP standard has been established…we now look forward to bringing that same level of hard work, consulting and services to the pipeline space.

If you just want a list of our services…well, here’s that too!

Full scale services include: Esri Enterprise and Software Implementations/Configurations, Integrity Management Program (IMP) Support and Planning, PODS APDM and UPDM Consulting/Support, ESRI ALRP Support, Data Migrations/Conversions, Pipeline Risk Assessments/Updates, Federal and State Audit/Reporting Support, Transmission Software Assessments, Third Party Transmission Software Support/Utilization, MAOP Validation/Configuration, Pipeline Inspection Alignment and Data Loading (ILI, CIS, ECDA or DA), Field Data Collection and Asset Management Integrations
