How Southern Company Adopted the Utility Network as a Unified Model

Presented by: Scott Edwards, Southern Company and Joaquin Madrid, SSP Innovations
Room: Ballroom F

In 2018, Southern Company resolved to transition from its current ArcGIS/ArcFM Geometric Network GIS to a fully functional Utility Network implementation to be in production by the end of 2021. This ambitious project requires two fundamental stages: STAGE 1: Migration of Southern Company’s GIS data to the new schema. STAGE 2: And adapting workflows to exploit the behavioral richness of the new model. This presentation focuses on the migration stage. Particularly, on the definition of the Common Data Model, the challenges of unifying Southern Company’s three independent GIS implementations, and the rules governing the data migration workflows. Examples from an early Pilot Data Migration effort will be used to illustrate Adoption and extension of Esri’s Electric Reference Model; published by the Solutions Team via Asset Package 3.1, of July 2019. The use of ArcGIS Pro Templates to define Equipment Installations: modular collections of domain and structure features endowed with association rules that encapsulate the electric behavior of the ensemble. Strategies for mapping source feature classes, their relationships and attribution into the target Utility Network Templates.

Leveraging ArcGIS Enterprise platform with Operations Dashboard

Presented by: Gainesville Regional Utilities and Ian Martin, SSP Innovations
Room: Ballroom E

When Hurricane Irma struck Gainesville, FL with 70 mile per hour wind gusts and leaving a foot of rain in its track, the ArcGIS Runtime solution MIMS Mobile was still in development stage at the utility. The staff worked to configure MIMS Mobile throughout the night Hurricane Irma made landfall. The morning after provided only 30-minutes of training to 60 GRU staff to go out and collect storm damage assessment data and subsequently share that data with more than 800 GRU employees engaged in the outage response and restoration efforts using ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS web apps and ArcGIS Operations Dashboards. In addition, the information was used to drive the creation of material requests and estimate restoration times. The solution played a supporting role in restoring power to more than 60,000 of GRU’s retail and wholesale customer that were left without power in the aftermath of the storm. This presentation will provide insight into the solution and its benefits to GRU and the community and demonstrate how the Esri ArcGIS platform was utilized and complemented by the SSP Innovations partner solutions.
