Three of the Best New Updates to Fiber Manager™

January 9, 2012 — Dean Perry

Happy New Year! Now that I’m off the work management soapbox, I thought I’d tackle something altogether different: common tips and tricks in recent(ish) releases to make Telvent’s Fiber Manager™ even easier to work with.

NOTE: Much of this article consolidates information which can be found on Telvent’s fantastic education blog, ArcFM™ Buzz. Go here for more stuff like this.

Automatic Loss Values:

When utilities and telecoms are looking at a new fiber management tool, attenuation is a common topic. How is it managed? Is it included at all? What if I want a default loss setting other than zero? What about defaults for types of splices?

With 10.0.2, users are provided a way to create a list of splice types and assign default attenuation values to each type, solving many common attenuation issues.

Open up your Fiber System Settings (also called “User Settings”) using the button on the Fiber toolbar:

Then you can set default loss values for each of the Splice types. The Splice Type menu, by the way, is fully configurable as well.

Then when you edit connections in Connection Manager, your “G” splices will have the defaulted values.

Trace Multiple Fibers in a Cable:

You can now filter your trace features to trace specific buffer tubes…

You can even break it down to select specific/multiple strands inside the tube…

Or, of course, any combination therein.

Reporting:

The report feature of Fiber Manager™ was updated at 10.0.2 to complement the above new tracing functionality. The report now houses multiple traces, with expand-collapse functionality.

The new report includes length and loss values and additional information.

There is an added search box, which will highlight the results of your search…

Also included are buffer-tube “stripe” designation (a colored “S” or multiple colored S’s,) and an overall better user interface on the tool.

Thanks, and happy fiber management!
