The State of SSP

An Update from Skye Perry: Introducing SSP’s New CEO

January 5, 2022 — Skye Perry

It has been a while since I’ve personally updated our customers and partners on the status of SSP, and with the introduction of COVID to our world in early 2020, we haven’t seen each other in person in a long while. This update is both personal and important, and one that I wanted to proactively provide to our community.

SSP Innovations has continued to grow our utility business throughout 2020 and 2021 and, through the work of many talented team members, has established ourselves as the leading implementer of the Esri utility network. I am truly proud of the hard work our team has performed, humbled by the trust our customers place in us, and constantly excited by our ever-increasing partnership with Esri across both product and services.

It’s also hard to believe that it’s been one year since we acquired 3-GIS, officially forming our telecom line of business. The 3-GIS team has been fantastic to work with and their products are truly second to none. I couldn’t be more excited to see what 2022 has in store for our entire organization.

Unfortunately, 2021 has been a tough year for me personally. My family and I have been dealing with some significant and ongoing health issues with one of my children. As you can imagine, this has become my main focus. I’ve always preached the importance of putting family first, and I have been truly blessed by the amazing leaders we have in place across our organization – all of whom stepped in to support me during this very difficult time.

Over the last several months, I have kept the SSP board and our leadership team updated on my situation, with the hope that my schedule would eventually return to normal. However, in late 2021, it became clear to me that I needed the flexibility to continue to focus on my family, and that SSP needs and deserves the full attention of a passionate leader to continue to guide our amazing team into the future. With this in mind, I and the other members of the SSP board, recently began the search for the right individual to lead the next phase of SSP Innovations’ growth.

Effective immediately, I am pleased to introduce Patrick Vardeman as SSP’s new CEO! First and foremost, I am a huge fan of Patrick because he is a passionate, humble, and strong leader who will be an amazing cultural fit at SSP. Patrick also has significant experience in successfully growing a similar-sized software and services business with a keen focus on the employees, the customers, the processes, and all the surrounding metrics. Finally, Patrick and I have already developed a strong personal and working relationship with a focus on partnering together as we take SSP to the next level. I invite you to join me in providing Patrick a warm welcome to SSP and to the larger utility and telecom GIS industry. He is a great addition to the SSP family!

As an owner and board member of SSP, I have officially taken the title of Chairman of the Board which appropriately denotes the partnership I will have with Patrick and the rest of our amazing leadership team moving forward. I am excited to be here to support our team, our customers, and Patrick as he takes on this key position.

As chairman of the board, I also want to highlight the areas where I can continue to provide the biggest impact on a daily basis to support our employees, our customers, and our vision.

  • Our People & Culture – Those that know me know that this is an area I am very passionate about and what makes SSP such a special place to work. While I love the work I do at SSP every day, the people are why I get so excited.
  • Our Customers – I will continue to serve as an executive sponsor on specific accounts and plan to increase my support of our sales teams as we continue to work with our customers in realizing the true potential of their geospatial strategy.
  • Our Vision & Strategy – I will continue to support our teams in both the utility and telecom lines of business around our go-to-market strategy, our technology direction, and our overall vision for SSP within the industry.
  • Our Technology Evangelism – I got into this business because the technology was evolving at such a quick and exciting pace. I will continue to write, speak, and coach regularly as we continue to use technology to transform our customer’s people & workflows.

Over the last 15 years, I’ve seen SSP grow all the way from my basement office to the worldwide team of 350+ it is today. While stepping back from the day-to-day responsibilities of CEO has been a tough decision, I know that bringing Patrick in to lead the company is the best decision for the entire team and the future of the company as a whole. I also feel truly blessed to be able to continue in my new role while being able to take the time to support my family in the months and years to come.

I know some of you may have questions about this change and, as always, I want to be as transparent as I can with you. Please feel free to reach out to me directly or any member of our leadership team and we will get back to you as quickly as we can. In the meantime, I thank you for the confidence you continue to place in SSP each and every day. It’s been an amazing 15 years so far and we’ve got a bright future ahead together.
