ArcGIS Upgrade Helps Indiana Utility Future-Proof Its GIS

The Need

Enterprise GIS implementation, ArcMap Customization, Synergi Consulting, Enterprise GIS Customization, ArcGIS UpgradeLarge Indiana gas and electric utility upgraded to utility-standard GIS version to reap enhanced functionality and performance, as well as retain critical support.

The Background

Through its subsidiary utilities, a large Indiana corporation provides natural gas and electricity to a combined network of more than 1M customers.

The Challenge: An ArcGIS Upgrade

A large Indiana utility wanted to upgrade its GIS to 10.2.1 — what Esri calls the “utility release” of GIS. Four reasons drove their goals:
  1. Support: The utility wanted continued support for its core GIS platform, which would not be available on old technology
  2. Performance: The utility wanted access to performance improvements available only in the new version
  3. Features: The utility wanted access to feature enhancements, bug fixes and patches
  4. Stability: The utility wanted a stable, lasting version of GIS that supported modern business initiatives

Why SSP for the 10.2.1 Upgrade?

Esri itself recommended SSP for this utility’s upgrade.  SSP had broad, deep knowledge of the Esri ArcGIS platform and ArcFM suite, as well as a widely known industry reputation for successful 10.2.1 upgrades.

Upgrading to the Utility Release (ArcGIS 10.2.1.)

SSP upgraded the utility to 10.2.1. They also installed ArcFM Web™ with the Geocortex Viewer for HTML5, which took them off outdated Silverlight technology.

Making Portal for ArcGIS Available

In addition, SSP moved the utility’s Portal for ArcGIS installation out of test and into a high-availability production instance — which enabled the utility to use Portal to support daily operations.

Results of the ArcGIS Upgrade

In addition, SSP moved the utility’s Portal for ArcGIS installation out of test and into a high-availability production instance — which enabled the utility to use Portal to support daily operations. Today, the utility is currently at the most modern version of utility GIS — 10.2.1(x). They are receiving support, performance enhancements, bug patches and more.

The utility’s Portal installation is available for daily business use and out of test. With Portal, the utility is able to make, use and share maps with ease. They have left behind outdated Silverlight technology in favor of modern applications.

Thanks to this, the utility is now able to take on business initiatives with a modern, supported GIS they can use for years with confidence.
