Capital Work Design in Cityworks with SSP’s Workforce Management

February 8, 2017 — Skye Perry Ryan Potts

One of SSP’s first goals inpartnering with Cityworks was to show how Cityworks’ asset management system (AMS) can be used at electric or gas utilities. We are already seeing significant interest from our customers. With that said, one of the additional key reasons Cityworks approached SSP was because of our Workforce Management (WFM) product. SSP’s WFM handles capital work design for electric and gas utilities.

Recently, SSP and Cityworks revealed a full end-to-end solution for capital work design and asset management through the integration of their two systems, Cityworks and WFM. The solution was revealed at the Cityworks User Conference in December 2016.

End-to-End Capital Work Design

We began by looking at what each system does really well, and also where they overalp. Cityworks and SSP’s WFM both manage a library of material, equipment and labor. These libraries became a natural place for us to start synchronizing the systems.

WFM provides for the creation of Compatible Units (CUs) within its library. CUs allow customers to group a set of materials, equipment, and labor; then, an assigned CU code can be used to complete work. WFM’s library also allows for the creation of Macro Units (MUs). MUs allow customers to join multiple CUs together, when they are often utilized together per a utility’s construction standards. Within WFM, we manage the entire workflow of creating new design jobs, estimating the work, approving the job, and assigning the job to a crew for construction.

That same WFM job can be handed off to Cityworks on approval. This hand-off create a Cityworks “Work Order” along with the approved design costs for the job.

Cityworks then captures the as-built costs around material, equipment, and labor by using its work order functionality. SSP’s WFM can also pass an as-built list of materials to Cityworks. That’s an extra integration point to further automate data sharing.

Capital Work Design: WFM to Cityworks Integration Points

Applying this Integration

This integration with SSP’s WFM rounds out an area of Cityworks that may be missing. For instance, this could affect utilities designing their own jobs in house and/or utilizing CUs and/or MUs.

SSP Sr. Consultant Ryan Potts and I debuted this integration at the most recent Cityworks conference. Please watch that presentation, which describes the integration in more detail and includes a full demonstration.
